Metal Film vs. Carbon film resistors
#1

Are there specific applications for the two types, or is it a matter of personal preference between these resistors?

I have been buying the metal film type. Now I am in need of some 75K and 750K which I have found at Mouser. So I am wondering which to get.

Thanks for any input.

metal film is good and cheaper than carbon.
I like metal oxide as it is the cheapest and at 5% tolerance has the highest working temp up to 200 C (metal film - up to 155C). Metal film has better stability over temperature.

I've noticed that often one is cheaper then the other depending on the resistance value, both are far cheaper then carbon comp resistors though.
Supposedly they also have voltage ratings, but I have never had a 1/2 Watter arc over in any radio that I repaired so I guess the 400 v rating is high enough.

Standard 1/2 metal film are rated for 350 volts, but you can also get them at 500 and 700 for about the same price.

Here is Mouser's selection of 1/2W, 700v metal film resistors.
