A Philco Super 71 Slideshow (and a Super 89 slideshow too!)
#1

I created a Photobucket slideshow to illustrate the restoration/modification of my Philco Super 71.

Note from admin: Sorry, slideshow is no longer available. Click here to see complete details of the "Super" 71 conversion:

As a side note, the job is still not yet 100% complete; it still needs the proper knobs, and I need to finish painting the large tube shield.

Wow, Ron,

Beautiful job!!! I had to install Adobe Flashplayer 9, so I did. My 'pooter's been in the Stoneage for a while, sorta like taking a long flight aboard a DC 1.

Ron, that's a beautiful radio! I'm still planing on doing your super oscillator mod on my model 19. It was really rough when I got it, rusty chassis, most of the veneer along with the next layer underneath on the front arch was missing. I have finished restoring the chassis and the cabinet. It looks pretty good considering what I had to start with. It's one of those that if you stand back about ten feet it looks very good. But it will never be a museum piece. So I have no quams about experimenting with it. If it works out, I may try the mod on a 91 I have. But I'm still between houses and without a work bench. I'm thinking by fall things will be gitting back to normal and I will be able to work on some radios.

Thanks, guys. I have a Model 89 upon which I plan to perform this mod. It is at the painted-bare chassis stage; all of the tube sockets and parts need to be reinstalled. But with so many radios here to work on for others, the 89 mod is on the back burner for now.

Just for fun, I have put together a slideshow which illustrates what I have done with my "Super 89" project:

Ron, it looks like your 89 chassis came out of the same shed as mine. Icon_smile

Very nice job on both chassis, Ron. Also, the Philco 70 cabinet refinishing is beautiful. What is a Super 71? My Philco Radio book only seems to list a model 71B.

Oops! Nevermind. I just read this thread. http://www.philcoradio.com/phorum/showth...p?tid=1035

Now I understand.

Ed, the Philco models 71 and 89 along with several other models used a type 36 tube as the oscillator. It was a marginal circuit design that was very problematic. Ron has redesigned the circuit to use a type 6A7 tube as the oscillator, hence "super".

Oops, too late! Steve

Thanks anyway for the response, Steve.

The 70 cabinet housing my Super 71 chassis is another Barry Jones refinish job.

Barry does very nice work. It takes a great amount of skill and patience to achieve that level of finishing.

He's getting my 116B cabinet. Then my 650B Icon_wink
