Philco Junior - Model 80 Question
#1

Did these small cathedrals originally have any kind of Philco decal?

I have a fully unmolested Jr with finish in decent enough shape for me to think that whatever decal might be there woud still be present today at least in part.
Since there is no hint of it, I think there was none.

There is Philco sign on the escutcheon.

Thanks Morzh!... I am just getting ready to spray lacquer on it. I google image searched it too, and none of the photos had a decal.

I have noticed that as long as it says philco one time somewhere, weather it is on the dial, escutcheon, or a decal. Since the 80 has philco on the escutcheon then that is the only time it is used. I have not seen any philco with the word used twice besides tube or model decals.

Actually I have noticed that cathedrals before the Shuler design (like the one for the 43 cathedral) did not use the decal.
None of the 20, 21 (in 20 cabinet), 70 or 90 used it.
However the Jr is either by Shuler or derived from it, and many of them used the decal, so maybe 80 being the El Cheapo of the era did not use it as the cost-cutting measure, plus the size did not lend itself well to any bold lettering.

Well, I got it finished up today.. here is a photo of my latest victim..

It's not perfect, but I really like this little guy. Good performance from a little set!

Is the cloth original? Looks like it is. Have you cleaned it?

Very Nice.

Thanks to all for the nice compliments. It isn't perfect, but I think it looks pretty good. I used Chuck's modification, switching a resistor in the IF can from 4 meg to 2 meg. It helped a lot and now the set makes plenty of volume. I am very thankful for the work that Chuck and Ron put into the website. It is chock full of nice little hints on how to make things better.

The grill cloth is not original. I am pretty sure that it is the small herringbone cloth that I bought from Kenny Richmond. He sells excellent grill cloth.

I have original cloth in my Jr and it looks exactly the same.

Beautiful Junior! Icon_thumbup Very nice work, and you should be proud. I have one, but it has been molested a bit, including a toggle switch sticking out of one side, controlling who knows what?

I am just finishing a customer's 37-61F and I am getting ready to start on my own 37-650. I love floor models, and I believe that the Philco's of the late 30's had the most attractive styling. Many of them look like miniature skyscrapers.

You mentioned the person from whom you bought grille cloth. Is there a website, or some way that I can buy some? It looks like excellent cloth. It would be incorrect for my 650, but would look great on my Junior.

Michael (vwminister) - Hi and welcome!

Kenny Richmond is who you need to contact for grille cloth. You can see his offerings here:

http://www.richmonddesignsinc.com/antiqu...loth_sales

or see his cloth on eBay - look for the seller richmonddesignsinc.

You will want the "Small Herringbone Weave" for your 80 or 81 Jr.

He also sells the correct chevron or "V" cloth for your 37-650X console.
