Philco 20 Donated Finished
#1

I just had a Philco 20 donated to the museum by the Talent OR Historical Soc. I guess I'll be putting on a presentation on old radios there in late Nov or Dec. How could I say no when they were holding a 20 with an almost perfect grill. Just a little veneer gone, and a little around the edges.

Not so funny though, it has a 380 intact, but I pulled out both of the ST 71s and one of the heater pins just snapped off. I haven't looked under the chassis yet. The top has a little rust & mouse poop, but I never had a pin corrode off.

Well see.

I would never say "no" to a 20.
I am in fact still hunting the plain one.

Nice donation! Give 'em a good show!

Mike is still hunting for the plain early version "Baby Grand" model 20, which is interesting because I wanted one of the late model "Deluxe" versions but all I ever see are the plain ones. Maybe I should start seeking an early version model 20 then I will find a late version model 20?

And of course it would have to be one of the pricier 71's that went south on you! Couldn't be the economical 80. Oh well... Take care, Gary

In my case (20 lowboy) they went out, took the output transformer AND burned out the auto-bias resistor section in the big vitreous divider.

No the tube isn't bad, one of the big pins just corroded off. Just on that tube. It and its brother both test 2000/1650 on my Hickok. I'll just put a new base on it. They were both STs the 380 was also good.

The chassis had some rust on it. I would say about average for that vintage Philco. I have cleaned it up and will touch up the spots. It looks good, only one cap replacement and all of the 24s and 27 are Philco globes.

It is almost done. Here are some pictures. The cabinet still needs to be rubbed out and polished.
