This 81 year-old cabinet turned out pretty nice. I used Mohawk toners and lacquer. The pretty wood grain on the front "came out" after I began toning. I wish it were mine but alas, I must return it to its owner next week.

Looks great, Art. I'm still learning the fine art of refinishing. Did you use grain filler on this one?

Eric,
No grain filler on this one. No sanding either. Just strip, tone, and finish.

Thanks Art. I've got a 66B that I'm about to start on. What would determine if I need grain filler or not?

Eric,
I would go by feel and looking at it with a magnifying glass. I don't fill if I don't have to. I think it's a lot of work that is not always necessary. Sometimes it depends on the type of veneer. Some wood is more open than others.
I mean it's an old radio and doesn't need a piano finish IMHO. But I know people feel differently about this.

Thanks all. It was nice to work on a cabinet that didn't require much repair. There was a very minor ding on the arch and a VERY minor area of missing veneer on the front curve that you can't even see in the picture and hard to see in person. Someone took good care of this radio. Too bad it was neglected the last several years. The chassis had layers of grungy dirt. The knobs are in excellent condition also and fit snugly on the shafts. I did not polish the escutcheon--just gave it a good cleaning. I hope the next one is as pleasant to redo as this one was.
