Today's rescue: Philco 52-540
#1

I went to Goodwill outlet which is just bins of stuff thrown in, which gets thrown around by shoppers and often broken in the process.

I managed to find a complete Philco 52-540 with only a minor piece chipped off of the bottom back side. It's very minor and is only visible from the back. Being old plastic like it is, I'm amazed it didn't get broken worse than it did. The front grill and all is fine.

It even has the original back with it still. Oddly enough I saw the back first and wondered what it was.. tossing it to the side. Then I found the radio and realized that was the back I had found.

It has both knobs too and they turn fine.

It looks to be all original (probably not restored) so I didn't try plugging it in yet.

I'll post some photos later on since I just got home and haven't had any lunch yet. I'm bad about not eating when I get busy doing stuff like going to Goodwill Outlet haha.

What a nice score !!! Best of luck with the restoration !

Yeah, but now I realize I paid too much. I set it on the scale instead of paying for a single item price... so I ended up paying about $8 for it instead of $2-3 for a single item. It didn't feel that heavy but it's about 6lbs probably.

But still... $8 for it isn't bad.

Here are some chassis pics I just took.

Someone did a bypass repair due to a failing multi-section capacitor. They cut out a red wire and added in a new capacitor to make up for it.

Take note of the two green circles I put which shows how they bypassed. The smaller circle shows a stub of the old red wire still there. The larger circle shows where they snipped off the red wire at the capacitor.

The piece of electrical tape probably contains a soldered spot which has a light blue wire added in to connect the newer cap over to ground, thereby emulating 1/3 of the old mullti-section capacitor.

I passed up two 60's Japanese made (odd brand name) ones at Value Village yesterday.
