46-1201 - Cap question...
#1

Hi all,  long time no post...

I'm working on a 46-1201 radio phono combination and came across an odd capacitor that
I've never seen before.
Keeping in mind that I'm relatively new to all of this,  I've attached the section if the schematic for
this part.  It appears to be a paper capacitor with a coil wrapped around it.

What is it called?  What does it do?  Can I just replace the capacitor and leave the coil alone (it won't
really be wrapped around the capacitor any more)?

Should I just leave the whole thing alone?

Thanks.

The coil and capacitor combination serves to create a series resonant circuit at the 455 kHz IF frequency. This provides better bypassing of circuit ground to the chassis and prevents possible oscillations in the IF.

The best solution would be to restuff the original cardboard tube with a modern cap inside and leave the wire wrapped around it as original.

Thank you kindly for the explanation. Much clearer now.

Thanks. My radio projects have been few and far between, but I've been reading and researching as I go.
This is one of my favorite places, I learn so much here.
