Zenith 6-S-321 - What Type of Wood is This?
#1

This is the front of my Zenith 6-S-321.  I know the front is a photofinish but was wondering what type of wood was being replicated.  The walnut burl is obvious but what is the other type of wood that is being replicated?  The pattern with the vertical lines?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I think that the burl that is being mimicked also could have been an olive burl, the striped stuff could be a copy of Sapele or ribbon mahogany veneer, or quarter sawn French walnut. But with a faux finish some creative license may have been taken on colour and pattern. If it were my set I would try touching it up since it does not look to be in bad shape.

It's a little beyond the "touching up" approach  Icon_biggrin.

I would have guessed the swirled front panel is camphor burl, not walnut burl.

That cabinet is almost beyond salvaging really, is it worth doing because to my way of thinking sets that had a 100% faux finish were typically low end cheapies? I guess adding the name "Stars and Stripes" along with that magic Brand Z name is good enough for some people, but I really do hate faux finishes when they are overused that way. I'm not sure what camphor burl looks like but olive burl or even a maple burl could look similar to that with a tinted laquer on top. Here is one that someone stripped, pitty to whomever bought the thing that way, especially if they paid that asking price, even if it did not originally have that faux finish on it the one someone put on it still looks like crap:

It looks a lot worse than what it really is and the repairs should be pretty basic. The broken piece along the right corner is just the outer cheap nondescript veneer that wraps around the more solid wood underneath. The wood underneath is undamaged. I have all the missing pieces not shown in the photos. The top is an easy repair and the bottom base "foot" just needs to be glued back on. Then the entire piece of nondescript veneer across the front and sides needs to be removed and replaced with a new one. After that I need to come up with a way of creating a new photofinish. Right now I'm working with this guy on a replacement:

If it doesn't work out I'll use actual veneer.

As for this particular model I've seen them go for pretty decent prices on eBay when they are in decent shape. Here is an example I found on the internet:
