630 chassis vs picture of layout
#1

Hi Guys, I decided to work on my 630 chassis beore the 89 I have, I want to give the 630 as a gift when I get done so I figured the best thing was to start on it soon, never know it might take me a while. My question is, when I compare the chassis to the printer chassis layout it seems different. The layout shows a connection strip on the side of the chassis which I do not have and my chassis has a few more bakelite boxes than the layout shows. Do you think this is normal or do I have the wrong schematics, chassis layout for this model? I included a pic of both the chassis and the printed layout. Thanks for any help on this.

The chassis you have looks like a late production 630, or a 635.

The under-chassis layout you have pictured is for a 37-630.

Big difference.

Get the proper service info for the right radio and then proceed from there. Icon_smile

Ahh, Thanks Ron. Seemed like there was to big a difference for it to be correct. I will try to find the correct info. The cabinet looks like the 630B in the pictures on your philco pages. Thanks again. If anyone reconizes this chassis as to whether it is a late model 630 or 35 please let me know. In the meantime I will try to find those schematics and see if they match. Icon_smile

The 630B and 635B cabinets are the same.

Quick way to tell the difference:

Does your chassis have a shadow mask behind the dial scale? (Another flat disk that looks like a dial scale, but has three holes in it that moves with the band switch.) If so, it is definitely a 635.

The shadow mask also includes a lever that is attached to the band switch which moves the mask. Judging by the photo you posted above, yours appears not to have the lever, so yours must be a late (2nd) version 630.

OK, Let me see...... Mine has another disk behind the dial with 3 elongated holes but it doesn't move with the dial, also I don't see a lever that attaches to move anything so looks like it must be the 630pf from what you are describing. also, inside the cabinet it has a sticker that says its a 630 so between that and your info I think your right about it being the 630pf model. I noticed the parts page for the 630pf doesn't show a picture of the chassis layout but the 635 parts layout does and it looks just like this chassis. I spose I can use the 635 parts layout to help see where all the parts are located but use the 630pf schematic for connections, info etc. Thanks for all your help. I will see how far I can get here without bothering anyone for advice... dreams are nice eh. : )

Who are "they"?

It doesn't matter what "they" say.

The 630 and 635 use the same tube types. 78 RF amp - 6A7 det-osc - 78 IF amp - 75 2nd Det-AVC-1st Audio - 42 Audio Output - 80 Rectifier

A good question, "they" are whoever wrote some info on the  630 and 635 chassis at RadioMuseum I saw when I was searching for schematics. I definitely would go by what you say before others, your the expert in my book. Warren

he is telling you what you have but your not listening

Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this justice as a gift

OK, let's back up. The available service info for the second (late) version of Model 630 does not include an under-chassis drawing - just a schematic and revised parts list.

You can probably get by with the 635 info, as the 635 schematic appears to be the same as the 630, second (late) version.

Actually Sam, I was listening and understood. He was wondering who I was referring to as 'they" so I explained it. I think I have it sorted out now. I have the 630PF but for a picture of the chassis layout I can use the 635 picture. Thanks all.
