42-1008P Stain *Cabinet Done*
#16

No stain at all if you want it to look original. Buy the toned laquer in cans and use that. Ron suggested the colors for you to use from mohawk.
#17

So I would do filler, sanding sealer, toner, sealer, decals, sealer???
#18

I'm a bit confused...go figure.

The two toners suggested look reversed on the web page.

The one suggested for the top looks lighter.

Yes. Use filler, sand then you can use sanding sealer and sand again. Then use the toner laquer tapeng off the areas of different color . Then spray the satin or gloss finish, sand smooth if required then put the decals on. And finally spray the finish clear. Sand again if needed going up to 1000 grit at least and polish. You will have a nice finish then. I would practice useing the filler on something else first to get used to how it works.

if you look at this link, http://www.philcoradio.com/gallery/1942a.htm#aw , it looks like the front of "A" is light but the top right behind it is Dark. I think the front strip on "A" is light but right behind it on the very top it is darker but not the front strip.

So few pictures out there and they all seem to show differences Icon_sad

The one you linked to has a dark lower bar at bottom of the door. However some other pics show that entire line left to right being lighter.

There is also a b/w pic of the very top sections being all dark.

This is tough.

You're making it much tougher than it needs to be.

Go back and reread post #2 in this thread.

A nice thing about toning and clear lacquer is that you can always easily strip it and redo it if it doesn't look right the first time.

See if you can find a local outlet for Mohawk finishing products first before ordering out. I think that there are other brand of tone spray as well, Behlins and Deft used to market some.

Try Mohawk's "Find A Distributor" page:
http://www.mohawk-finishing.com/find-a-distributor.aspx

I tried it and it came up with five distributors near Folsom, CA.

There is a vendor in San Diego that sells Mohawk. Unfortunately their website is hopelessly broken. You might give them a call. When their website was working a couple years ago, they had great prices on Mohawk products:
http://www.alturapaint.com/

And then there's Pond Cove Paint in Maine. I've bought from them before. They are currently offering 10% off Mohawk products through the end of the month.

I have some other questions about toner in other areas.

Like the trim on each side of the face that swirls down into the sides by the door.

I'll get some pics up soon to show you what I am asking about.

I came across these guys that sell Mohawk as well although I have not yet bought anything from them.

Thanks for posting that link, Bob. Icon_thumbup $6.35/can for Ultra Classic is a very good price.
