Removing 38-12 Dial Assembly

The 38-12 I have was in the home of a HEAVY smoker and the tuning capacitor needs to come off and be cleaned. How do I remove the dial pointer so I can take of the dial face? It looks like the pointer is put on with a pin forced into the center of the tuning capacitor shaft but removing it could bend the pointer. Any suggestions?
