Any fix for a loctal socket?
#1

I finished restoring my 41-250 and have one issue that needs attention. The radio sometimes will not play until I wiggle the oscillator tube in it's socket. After this initial "adjustment" it plays very well. I've tried the usual contact spray, etc., but the problem remains. I'm ready to pull the socket and replace it, but I thought I'd check to see if anyone has a suggestion on how to fix this problem before I take that drastic step. Thanks.

The oxide that forms on the type of metal used for the tube pins usually doesn't not respond to spray cleaners. Try emery cloth, fine sandpaper, etc.

It may not be the socket connection at all. I had a 42-327 that behaved in much the same way and it turned out to be a bad mica capacitor in the oscillator circuit. Wiggling or pulling/reinserting the tube would cause the oscillator to start and it ran fine. Just wouldn't start up on its own.

Thanks exray. I have a fine, small, rat tail file that should fit into the socket pins and will give it a try. I think I replaced the caps in the oscillator with new micas, but I'll double check. I only want to replace the tube socket as a last resort, since its' a tight squeeze to get to it.

I spray the round needle file I use with contact cleaner that leaves a no-ox (De-Ox-Id) residue when I clean the Loktal socket contacts.
YMMV

The tube pins I treat like Exray does.

After trying the suggestions given to me, I decided to bite the bullet and replace the socket. The task was not as bad as I thought it would be, and now the problem is solved. Thanks to those who gave me their tips.
