ozarka v16
#1

Came across an Ozarka v16 radio.
Pretty rare radio for sure.
The 10 inch Rola speaker needs re-coning.
Will have to re-cone or replace.
Anyone ever re-cap one of these?

From what I was told there are only 2 or 3 known to exist so I would think twice about it. Reconing the speaker I was told could be done by anyone who normally provides that service.
There is however the opinion that doing either could very well lower the value of the radio. I would gather all the facts and proceed with caution.
Heck I can't even find a good picture of that console.
                                         Good luck.

As far as I know it will NOT lower the value of any radio if it' restored with care electrically, in fact I can't recall a proper electrical restoration even lowering the value of a late 1920s early 30s console, or anything later for that matter. It isn't that hard to restuff block condenser cans, recreate dogbone resistors, or find repro cloth covered wire if the original stuff is too far gone. Rola supplied speakers to a number of manufacturers much like Magnavox or Utah did, if it really needs reconing and can't be repaired you can send it to a pro or try doing it yourself with a replacement cone, if you have a light touch. Ozarka made some fairly collectable table sets but I can't recall that many people lusting after any of their consoles no matter how allegedly rare.

I think what he was getting at was replacing the Rola with some other brand speaker which for alot of guys would depreciate value.

I havent looked at the Rola's specifics but my guess is they can be found with some shopping

8" and 10" were used in lots of models so its a matter of finding the exact versions

Wow! I didn't even know Ozarka even existed long enough to make a radio like that! I've run across their 20's offerings over the years, but never later than the mid-20's styles.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Jayce;
Ozarka Radio lasted up until around 1932, if I remember correctly, and manufactured a lot of AC operated TRF cathedral and tombstone sets. I read an article in the AWA Old Timer's Bulletin on the company and in spite of the name their manufacturing plant was in the Chicago area. Ozarka was rather like Belmont radio, they made a lot of their money manufacturing private label sets for store chains. One interesting thing of note is that some of their chassis were made out of a cast aluminum rather then from stamped or folded steel.

I agree with that at least, yes reconing or exact replacement are the best options. That's a neat looking set, it sort of reminds me of the consoles offered by another famous Chicago manufacturer in those years.

Murph, neat looking radio. I hope to got it! If so, looking forward to pictures. As Bob indicated, the speaker should be no problem if the field coil is good. Nice if the OT is good but not a show stopper. Cones are not brain surgery to replace, even I have done some!
Good luck, Jerry

A friend in need is a pest!  Bill Slee ca 1970.

I just looked up this radio ! http://www.nostalgiaair.org/pagesbymodel...012746.pdf What a great receiver for its period ! It should be very sensitive as well as selective with two TRF stages before the final tuning and mixer stage, and the audio circuitry is quite advanced for its period. I will be very interested in watching your progress with this wonderful receiver ! Best of luck, murf ! Icon_thumbup

Hi Bob,A  local radio enthusiast and I looked this chassis over  tonight and have a few observations to report.we noticed tht the antenna coil was bypassed due to it being open,as well as a missing choke which had apparently burned out.Don\'t know if it was tied into to the tone control that is unhooked.Looks like the 10 mfd e-caps listed on the crappy schematics were at sometime replaced with 8mfd caps .these are marked on the cans.I need to find out from MR. OZARKA what I can do to replace the missing choke and wire it in to conform to the original schematic, as well as the wiring of the tone control. What a mess.I hope I am not offending a previous owner who might have made some of these mods years ago.I just need to get the required info to bring it back to life.Pics can be added. murf

Do you mean that this radio was his? I need to find out who removed the choke and why, other than it burned out, and why the open antenna coil was bypassed, as well as how many times the e-caps were replaced. I need to find out how to re-install and rewire the missing choke and how to re-wire the tone control. I think maybe the tone control was originally wired into the missing choke. Help!!!!!!!!!! 11. murf
