Philco 38-8
#1

Hi guys,.. I'm new to the phorum Icon_biggrin ,.. I been hanging out at the other place for a few years, but yesterday saw my acquisition of my first wooden, floor model radio.. A Philco 38-8.. So I figured I better sign up here..
The radio seems to be in fairly original condition.. The cabinet looks good for its age.. No peeling or bubbled veneer, although it could use refinishing.. The chassis doesn't show any outward signs of repair..
I looked over the schematics for this one, but don't know anything about this brand.. My experience is mostly in the AA5 types..  I'm not a pro, just a guy that likes to tinker with old stuff.. Any tips on what not to do (pertaining to this radio) before I start would be much appreciated.. Oh and, Did this radio have a dial glass?? this doesn't have one, and I can find no info on it..

Hi Stan and welcome,
Yes your dial should have a glass over it. Either it is broken or someone has moved the dark trim ring that holds it. In this case you will need both.

This set is a bit bigger that an AC/DC set but it plays a lot better than one. You missed a bunch of grief by a year, 39'-42' models use rubber wire.
