I'm no expert on this as I am not an engineer, but I can tell you from practical experience that a speaker field seldom gets so hot that you can't touch it. This is not true for a resistor being used as a replacement for a field coil.
Since we've gone in an electronic restoration angle, I've moved this thread to Philco Electronic Restoration.
