I removed the screw and nut holding the spider, and wiggled the spider/cone around. Re-seated the nut and reinstalled and tightened down the screw. It seems to be a lot better. The cone seems to be secured pretty well all around the edge. There's a cardboard washer secured by a series of screws around the perimeter that looks pretty solid, so I don't think that is an issue.
