Yes, the Hickok 600 series testers are notorious for the power cord wires inside the rubber jacket crystallizing . Use at least 16 AWG.
If you strip the old jacket off after replacing there is greater than 90% chance you will find crystallized wires. Mine were bad the entire length of the cord. Manufacturing problem
