41-226 Restore And The XXD Tube
#1

I am finishing up the electronic restoration of a decent looking 41-226. Lots of tight spaces and rubber wire. The recap went well, except I was plagued with motorboating at the high end of the B/C band.

Looking at the sets construction, I wondered how it ever worked. Open IF transformer under the chassis, and wires running all over the place. I swapped out the tubes one at a time without success. The set came with a 14AF7 in place of the XXD. I tried another 14AF7, with no luck.

Finally I found a real XXD tube, and that resolved the issue. I really don’t know what the difference is between the two tubes, but obviously there’s something. Looking up this tube seems to always list 14AF7. I found a post on ARF with the same issue with a similar radio, and there too, an XXD fixed it.

I’m glad this radio is going, and it really pulls in the stations. Nice sounding radio with plenty of volume.

Just thought I’d share this with you in case it comes up with someone else. Beware of substitutes!
