Well this is a strange one. After trying the chassis again and finding it doesn’t track well, I tried to realign the front end again using my signal generator monitored by my frequency counter. The results were as stated before, I can get the upper and lower end of the band right on but it’s off in the middle. Sooo I tried a different approach. I used my digital portable radio to pick up the oscillator of my 37-116 and aligned it by setting the portable to 470Khz higher than the dial setting on the Philco on both ends of the dial. My portable has a signal strength indicator, also digital, and aligned the oscillator trimmers for maximum indication on the portable. Then I peaked the antenna and RF trimmers using a radio station and now the dial reads right on and tracks very well! I like using this method because I don’t need to worry about overloading the set with too strong of a signal which might explain why the oscillator settings were off plus I don’t need to listen to the 400hz modulation piercing my ears. I redid the front end alignment on all 5 bands like this. When using the Philco alignment procedure on band 5 they want you to use some variable cap temporarily tacked in for oscillator alignment which I don’t have but I figured just adjust the oscillator for maximum on my portable and I can’t go wrong! Now on to refinishing my cabinet where I left off last Fall.
