The power cord goes out the hole in the back panel so hole on the side must be the external antenna access as you described. The internal antenna connections are next to the hole.
The static I described is more of a chattering. The stations are fairly strong. I'm in Nashville and WSM is a very strong channel. Is a chattering sound related to reception interference or a component issue?
