Morzh, Prayers for your mom. I am sure that there was enough pain living through the Holocaust as a child. I pray daily for peace and respect between cultures, and try to act in the same manner. I hope that your mom's current pain can be alleviated and that she experiences happiness from the love of family and friends.
I agree with you that TRF sets, especially the Model 20 are rather easy to work on. Even those sets that suffer from the famous (or infamous) rot caused by the choice of insulation between primary and secondary windings are easier to deal with than the superhets that suffer from the same issues, especially the 89s. (I have not dealt with 71s or other autodyne superhets except for the 80. That one worked the first time I rewound the coil. However, the circuit is somewhat different.
As to quality of sound, somehow, I think that the TRF sets should sound cleaner. However, almost all TRF sets are cursed with Grid Leak or Biased (Plate) detectors, while superhets had the gain necessary for diode detectors, which (in theory) are supposed to have less distortion.
