70 and 90 are Superhets, but at least the 2x45 model of 90 uses the Plate detector (and so does 70).
Also the Atwaters, 82, 84 use them.
They all sound...so-so. Especially AKs. I keep seing folks asking questions why AK8x suck so much: hum, distortion. Same problem I have. I don't think without changes in circuitry it is possible to improve upon it.
96 (as well as 95), a TRF, on the other hand uses a diode detector. So it sound just fine.
