My set had the same faults as yours when it was about 30 years younger, so I think that these components are susceptible to failure for whatever reason. That may also be why your set, and mine, were retired, an open output transformer would have resulted in a dead radio. I will see if I can find that magazine article on a solid state replacement for the audio interstage transformer, at least that would allow one to test it with about $3 worth or parts rather then spending $25 on a replacement on a radio that you may not want to put too many dollars into. If you can rewind the audio output transformer that would be a good thing, unless you can pull one from a scrap chassis.
