I recommend not questioning what fails and what doesn't:
- All paper caps fail. All. Period. Yank and replace.
- All electrolytics fail.
- All resistors are to be checked and replaced as needed (20% tolerance is OK).
Don't fail
- Mica caps. Only replace if damaged. Only check (open circuit, de-solder on lead only) if thee circuit does not work and there is no other good explanation. That is, leave alone unless really have to check.
