I will typically leave the filter condenser cans in place for appearance, even if restuffing them is impractical, it's normally easy enough to connect replacements under the chassis. With regard to the dial I have a Musicaire set, made by Sentinel, that uses a similar mechanism to that Belmont, but I think it is still functional, warping and breakage of the disk seems to be a common failure of that design and there are a few articles about how to repair them.
