I didn't expect anyone would really know how to get that coil out of the can. My thought is the fiber(?) wafer has slightly expanded over the years. So I decided to take the bull by the horns and try something. I removed the can from the chassis to gain better access to the complete coil and can outside of the radio. Removing that ring, no easy task, allowed the can to be removed from the bottom. Now with more room to work I was able to use a small dremel sanding drum to grind down the inner ring as seen in the previous picture. Didn't take much but just enough to get the coil out. I had to be very careful so as not to damage a coil. Once I got the coil out I sanded down the wafer so it was easier to insert it back in. I now have the new grid wire installed and the whole assembly back in the radio. Both coils survived (whew). Getting that ring back on the can was the hardest part. The ring is pretty strong. I need to replace the wire on the other IF coil. Hope that one is not as bad.
