Thanks for the advice.  I'll make it a point to test the resistors that I remove.  It will be interesting to see the difference between tests.

I am what I would call a novice at soldering.  I have done it a handful of times before (replacing capacitors in a couple modern Samsung TVs, other small projects).  I definitely don't have the vacuum/pump setup for desoldering.  I do have the braid to sop it up.  This is already my biggest soldering project to date.
