After you finish stripping the top and sides I would lightly sand the darker areas. I'm Not sure what to suggest with that black area, I once took one of those stains out with phosphoric acid, others have used oxalic acid, or some other wood bleach. As an experiment you could try wiping it down with acetone, just to see if it's something soluble like ink rather then an iron stain.
