Something missing from this 46-1209 tuning shaft

I agree with Ron, there appears to be a C-clip on the end of the tuning shaft. My thought is that is is there to hold the shaft in place in the chassis. As it is now the shaft just pulls right out of the front of the chassis. There must have been some means to hold it in place. So I could fasten a gear to the end of the shaft but I would still need some means to keep the shaft in place in the chassis. It looks like it will best to try to locate an original replacement; all my inquiries have netted nothing so far.

Mars, thanks for the pictures. Just for grins, do you have dimensions for the gear like diameter and tooth spacing? Thanks.
