Hi Vlad,
Nice job on the presentation! I have 4 Zenith portables:
-A 1948 Zenith 4G800 "Zenette"
-A 1947 6G001 "Universal"
-An 8G005 Transoceanic, earlier model with the 117Z6 rectifier
-A Royal 3000 Transoceanic.
The first 3 are functional. I recapped the Zenette. I need to recap the other two, but they are fully functional with no hum. A credit to the quality of the parts that Zenith used, 80 year old electrolytics that still function. Yes, they will be changed.
The 3000 needs to be recapped at the very least because, like most 60 year old transistor radios, this one is not functional. The chrome case has quite a bit of pitting (Chrome over pot metal, like 60s cars?) but I paid $19.00 plus shipping for it.
I picked the 8G005 over the others because:
-They sold for less than any of the other TOs, especially the unobtainable sailboat or bomber TO sets.
-No 1L6
-The loctal tubes are quite available and are"cooler looking" IMHO
-The push-pull output stage
-This one had a battery pack and extra 1.5V cell. There was actual residual voltage to the battery pack. Unusable, but there. I hollowed it out.
The chassis finish on both the 6G001 and 8G005 are in amazing condition, as are the bases of the loctal tubes. The wiring is still in good condition also. The cloth covering is not fantastic, but I did the shoe polish trick to sufficient satisfaction. I am more interested in the electronics than the aesthetics.
