The very first thing I do, before even starting cleaning the chassis, is testing the tubes.
And while I have to admit it is not many of them that are bad, I get bad ones every other set. Except the 38-12 series and likes: even with shot rusty chassis in a totally in-shambles case, the tubes were always OK.
"Bad" can be anything from Zero emission or VERY weak to an open filament or internal inter-electrode short. Couple of gassy ones.
People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
