Full Recap vs Break/Fix Repair: Vintage Receiver
#10

I just saw this and am going to jump in. On solid state, I think it depends on the brand of the cap. When I worked on Sears TV's back in the 80's, it would often be a lighter gray color that failed, usually the higher voltages, in the Vertical, and power supplies. The Toshiba made sets were recommended to replace those all in the vertical when in for service. I seldom had to change any lower voltage caps elsewhere.

I noted that when I recapped my Dynaco PAT4, it DID wake it up - but wasn't remarkable either. I have an original - only changed the output transistors due to static, etc and have been running it for years in my radio room. Still plays perfectly.  Well, let me back up, I did go ahead and change the output coupler caps since I was staring at them anyway.

On the tube stuff, yeah, I normally replace any paper or elecrolytics for the reason mentioned above. They WILL fail. However, there certainly is a quality difference, where I always have to replace on ac/dc radios, TV's, and some HiFi. Now, I say "some", because it seems they used higher quality caps on a lot of those, and I've had some come up with zero issues. And keep running with same. For long term, yeah, recap 'em. But, lytics are lytics, and power transformers are expensive.

If I could find the place called "Somewhere", I could find "Anything" Icon_confused
