You were right on about that power transformer! Looks like the original has been replaced with a Thoradson 24R06U. Whoever replaced it kept the 6X5 tubes but put two high wattage 1K resistors in series with the plate circuits. Don't know why unless it's because the transformer wasn't an exact replacement. Here is a pic.
