Looks like your Philco uses cheap "white wood" for the end pieces, most likely toned Extra Dark Walnut while the main body of the set would have been toned Medium Walnut.
Tinted lacquers were used originally; these are available today as toning lacquer, in the color names mentioned above, by Mohawk. These toning lacquers produce a realistic finish, much more so than stains and varnishes ever could.
