Hi Terry,
I believe the outside is bad. The coil has 5 terminals that should have continuity between all 5. I have continuity between 1&2, 2&3, and 1&3. No reading between any of those and 4 or 5 or between 4&5 either.If I read my micrometer right it looks like #38 or maybe #40 gauge magnet wire.
