The grille insert is, most likely, not original. Notice how it is offset to the right and is also just a bit too wide (top to bottom) for the opening? I would bet it was installed later by someone who wanted something that looked a bit more decorative than the typical tapestry grille cloth, which may have become damaged prompting this addition.
Nice detective work Ron, Was the wooden cross section on the legs offered to just some models? I checked on this one and no evidence any where ever on there  , was there  ever a speaker board for grill cloth to be attached? What would  this be worth as it sits?
