Gloss lacquer that isn't rubbed out will end up looking a lot like polyurethane.Yes I can relate to that, high gloss lacquer is about 90% gloss level until in is wet sanded and buffed, then it will be at 100% gloss and as smooth as glass, is that what should be done on 116?, piano finish. I will grain fill , stain and tone , then apply clear sanding sealer which will then be sanded lightly then I will clear it using Mohawk clear instrument lacquer 4 - 5 coats , which is very durable , wet sand with 1200 grit then then polish . 10/4 will do .Thanks
