Well, there is your answer: if your transformer does not smoke without rect tube, it is either the tube OR what is after the tube thAt smokes it. Start measuring your load.

Measure Ohms from 84 tube pin 4 (K) to chassis.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.
