My favourite on the audiotwit scale of things are the "audio grade" power cables. 100 miles to the power station, and the last 3 ft of wire makes all the difference! One can buy silver wired mains leads & gold plated plugs.
Oh, and I hope you are all using silver-bearing solder on those components in your audio stages.
For the most part, I despair at the Emperor's state of undress, but it can be fun to watch the deluded reasoning at work with this stuff.

Well...dollar cables may be iffy. I had an RCA cable which I bought cheaply, well,i the wire just pulled from the connector without me putting any real effort into it.
But I bought some excellent cables from Amazon for around 3-5 bucks.

I used to sell Legacy Audio speakers and still have most of my demo units including the Whisper speaker system. I had the opportunity to attend the CES show in Las Veges couple of times. The vendors in the high end audio section of the show were an eye-opener when it comes to selling snake oil. We were in one vendor's booth selling AC cable for $1000/ft. It was an inch in diameter plastic honeycomb tube with individual silver conductors in each cell. After asking what was on the other side of the AC outlet, and if we could buy enough to get to the dam, we were kicked out. The show was full of this kind of stuff. People hear what they think they want to hear after spending the big bucks.
Did you know that putting green paint around the edge of your CD's improves the sound? Something about scattered laser light. Or, how about the $.15 solution (not sure of the exact amount but that's irrelevant)? this was written up in Stereo Review I believe: Place a dime and a nickel (or what ever it was) on the top of your speakers. You will discover that the sound "opens up" and the stereo imaging is improved. That's the kind of stuff I had to deal with when selling high end audio. Sometimes, convincing people that much of this stuff was bogus was a real chore. I didn't sell the crap but was often asked the questions.
This thread has taken an interesting direction!

Well.. people believe in all kinds of stuff.
Just 10 minutes ago I spoke to a childhood friend of mine, who is into paganism etc.
So, in 15 minutes I was told:
1. Flu shots, as well as stuff like that - snake oil and conspiracy.
2. Flu pandemic is fro the CIA labs around the world.
3. McDonald and others are conspiring to poison or screw up bene pool of other people by feeding them GMO meat etc.
4. Einstein has been disproven.
5. Chinese have made perpetuum mobile and physics claming it's impossible (energy conservation law) is crap.
And many more.
So, cables are child's play.

Just add one of these power cables to your Walmart stereo system and it will transform it into a state of the art HIFI, really! You will be able to brag to all your friends about it.
I can't believe people truly believe that this would do anything to improve the sound of a persons system to any degree at all.
I had one customer insist that he could hear the difference between standard 60/40 solder and silver solder. If I was not willing to use silver I would not be allowed to work on his equipment. Being in a service position I will use what ever solder you like.

People go to psychics and take some supplements that at best don't do anything and at worst could kill you, so....if they believe that, why not hear the silver solder.....as long as he pays american money for me using it, I will use platinum and gold-pressed latinum, and tears of first-borns as the flux.

I'm a Lieutenant with the US Public Health Service, my current duty station is at the FDAs Office of Generic Drugs. So, naturally I have lots of conversations about vaccines, brand name vs generic drugs, Western medicine, etc.
It keeps me on my toes!
Oh, and I have friends who believe the Earth is flat.

There are enough loonies. As long as they are harmless loonies, I don't mind. When people start dying because of their lunacies, this is where I draw the line. Science is not a point of view, it is science. Science can make mistakes but it uses scientific methodologies that are the only way to eventually get good results. This is why when presented with poppycock like "we should teach children alternative views" or "we should outlaw HIV treatment", I say "my ears are shut".

Long, long time ago, when people believed in flat Earth they would by globes in stores and then flatten them.
