 Being my first attempt at a large transistorized stereo I lean toward it being my error somewhere that caused the condition. The one thing I hope points to something simple is after the pop when first turned on it plays just fine with no noise and good selectivity and sensitivity.

...I hooked a Lafayette mpx to it and the sound was , well weird. You could hear the music but it sounded like two different stations playing at once and the words to the songs sounded like they were in a echo chamber.

It could be that your left and right channels were out of phase with one another...or else there is a problem with the Lafayette MPX decoder. Most likely the former.

Been looking for a fisher tube amp and MPX. Wow, they are sure proud of them on ebay.

You can say that again! I bought my Fisher 400 at Kutztown back in May for $275. On the auction site they usually ask double or more. And you can't find a 500 or 800 there for less than $1000.
