Read the bottom portion of the 2nd page of the above literature link that Nathan posted. The "Inclined Sounding Board" in this unit allows the speaker to be against the chair without interfering with sound. Interesting.

I thinks it's unusual that it has speaker cloth by the dial also. Maybe some sound bleeds out there too.

I agree. I think the top grill design must have been something about projecting the sound upward. The 630CSX didn't have it, however, so maybe it didn't pan out with customers.
The 630CSX design says customers wanted the sound to project out into the room more, rather than upward. But that upward-facing grill is absolutely the defining feature of the 28/29CSX.
