I was visiting one of the local Salvation Army stores looking for
decent LPs and they had just dragged out and displayed a nice
looking Philco Model 112X radio. As they weren't asking an arm
and a leg for it, I brought it home with me. All looks intact and
in overall decent shape. A good friend of mine restores tube audio
components so I'm thinking of getting this up and running. The
one thing I do know is that the 10 1/2" speaker is very badly
damaged.... with much of the fiber cone torn from the basket.
I'm wondering if its tough to find a decent replacement speaker?..
Even though its just AM.... I'd like to get this radio back in nice
operating condition. The console itself is real nice.... just a bit
of the clear varnish missing in spots.

Welcome to the Phorum!
Speakers can be found at swap meets, ebay, or some online vendors. They can also sometimes be repaired. If the voice and field coils are still good the cone may be repairable or a new cone can be installed. Your friend who restores tube equipment probably has done this at some point. If it has not been done, you will also need to gave the radio recapped. Not too difficult but necessary.

Welcome to the Phorum. Congrtas. on the radio. Here is a link to the speaker files that show what speaker s go with what radios it is a zip file. If you have an early 112x the H-6 speaker is what to look for. The H-6would be stamped on the back of the speaker.

Worst case some other speakers will sound fine, forgot does it use G or H one?
Electrically a 111 type H (don't know again whether it should be H or G) is exactly the same as 111 and 112 are the same radio,112 chassis being pretty much 111 chassis.
If the same type speaker with different field coil the coil could be serialised or bypassed with a resistor if needed, and the transformer could be changed too.

Oh lord...
I sold the speaker to a forum member at the end of the meet... yeesh!
I can email him and see if he wants to sell it as he did not have a use for it but it was in great condition...
112X owner, message me what you want to pay for it. Shipping would probably be about $20.00 from him to you. Maybe less since it is so close..

Thanks everyone.
Kirk.... I sent you a PM.
In the near future, I'll be getting the chassis
to my friend so he can confirm that its
in good enough shape for refurbishment.

...and Kirk has an extra 112 chassis too! And he can part with it for a very reasonable amount if you need a spare.

Good news.... I took the chassis and speaker to my
friend who does restorations. He brought the unit up on his variac
and confirmed that the speaker does still function and the chassis
is a good candidate for restoring. I'm sending the speaker off to one
of the sources that Klondike provided a link to. In the meantime, I'm
reading up on how best to redo the top of the cabinet, as it has lost
some of its top coat of varnish. Otherwise, its in real decent shape.

The clear on the cabinet would have been a gloss nitrocellulos lacquer and any color would have likely come from a toning lacquer. Some folks are skilled enough to be able to strip just the top, re-tone and then spray on new clear lacquer and make it look like it should. I'm not one of those guys, the top would likely look different than the bottom. If you'd like to start a thread on cabinet restoration for just the top of your cabinet, start it up in the "Cabinet Restoration" section. Show some pictures so folks can offer advice. You may decide to just leave it as is or use the "Restore a finish" approach. That can help make it look a little better but does not add new lacquer where it is missing. Just my 2 cents.

I'm just about ready to crank this 112X up. I did send the original
speaker out to be professionally restored, It came out great but the
replacement chassis plug wires were too short. Apart from
having to lengthen them a bit, everything else worked out pretty decent.
I opted for polyurethane for the top of the cabinet which was the only
surface that was nicked up badly. The rest of the original finish is in
pretty nice shape. I managed to save the original grille cloth as
well. I'll have to come up with some type of antenna for it and then its
time to give it a listen.

>>>>>>I opted for polyurethane for the top of the cabinet....
.....and we won't hold it against you , not too much anyway.
As for the antenna, it might pick up some stations without it or with 2-3-foot piece of wire.
