Broken Tone Control
#1

AHHHH, CRAP!! While in the middle of restoring this ultra-rare Philco 19LZ with Police band, I've found a real dilly of a problem! The Tone Control (PART No. 30-4003), I found, has a terminal problem (literally!).
I'm half-way through the (9) bakelite condensers now, and already have the tin bypass box already stuffed with new capacitors. This has been tedious, but enjoyable. That is, til I started to do the tone control!
In order to even see the *$#&^% thing, you have to remove 2 bakelite condensers, both filter cans AND their associated mounting brackets and tensioner studs, along with the Police Band switch. I was finally able to rotate the tone control, only to see that one of the contact terminals is broken and gone! I thought that MAYBE I could replace the tone capacitors with the control in place, so I don't have to remove all the above components.
But, with a broken terminal on the tone switch, I don't know WHAT the deuce I'm gonna do now! Icon_cry Any remedies or suggestions from the Philcophile crowd?

Steve, I'm not familiar with the 19LZ so I took a look on the main site. Is this model with a 2 or a 4 position tone switch? It sounds like you'll need to remove it unless you're content to hardwire it for one tone setting only. I ordered a P-H600 3 position rotary switch from AES to replace a missing on-off on a Philco 20 only to find it later. It'll work electrically for a 2 position switch and for the 4 position if you want to leave off one of the caps. I can take measurements if you're interested.

Mine appears to be a 4-position tone control. And, as far as I know, all these tone controls have the same dimensions. I might pose this question to Ron or Chuck, since they are the experts. But I think I can put the extra you have in there. That's better than a broken one, for sure.
Mine comes from the volume pot, through a 10K resistor and goes to a bakelite condenser (7625-D). PM sent.

Dude! I can't get the PMs to work for me, so I sent you an email, but I got it back as undeliverable. yeeeep! I'll send your the asked amount for that control, so contact me. Please! Icon_wink

Well, whaddaya know! It seems I've been granted a reprieve by the Philco Gods!! I finally got everything off, including the offending tone control. That was......er, FUN! (ugly word) 11/32 nuts!
Anyway, I attempted to, and SUCCEEDED in, soldering the offending connection together with a little pad of solder to make contact, and IT WORKS!!!!
NOW, my only problem is to find out what value capacitors are supposed to be in part #30-4003. The Bintliff book just has an X for the values, so I guess I'll just wing it. I can extrapolate from the values of the known ones. It seems to have only two caps, oops, CONDENSERS!! in there.
Another thing I can't fathom is that all these dogbone resistors are IN TOLERANCE!! Fancy THAT after 75 years!
This old dahling is slowly coming together.
Hey, one of the filter cans reads something like .036 mfd. uh-huh! The other one reads okay. I'll play with it on my Sprague TO-6A just to do it, and to see if I can blow something up today! Icon_lol But it will be replaced by a smaller blue one from justradios.com. I'll go 2-10mfd@450V to keep her quiet.
That will leave a gaping hole in the chassis, but, with the trouble I had getting the tensioning hardware for the filters OFF, they won't go back ON!
As far as re-stuffing those bakelight tarboats, it is one MESSY job, but rewarding.
