I acquired this E-200-C s/n 058432 a number of years ago knowing that someday I would need it. it is very clean inside and is only missing the knob on the frequency dial. As far as I know it was working when I bought it. It powers up, as far as the tubes are concerned, but where do I go from here. it was used by another radio collector when I bought it. I was told he removed the knob, preferring to turn the large dial instead for tuning. Should I replace anything to start with? I have a new test lead assembly. I downloaded a manual but  have never used a signal generator before. Any guidance is appreciated.

Hi Mike. Do you have a frequency counter? If so you can hook the signal generator to it and check for accuracy of the generator. You probably should replace the electrolytic caps in it.
Other members on here can give you more detailed advice on what you should do.

Just started my signal gen which is the same as yours today. I found the video useful. My ver Generator looks more like yours. C108a-b is still a little confusing. My schematic is different that the older ver on the youtube

Still a little confused about how to attach the filter cap C108 a-c I watch the you tube by Dr Carlson it is an earlier mod. The 25uf pos is grounded Im confused as to the neg. Have you replaced these yet? I need to get some inline safety Caps as well. I did replace c107 and c109 only the .02 was off i see yours was replaced. But i could not see the .01 across the AVG JACKS . In circuit all my c108 are reading 9uf so thats why Im replacing them.

I haven't started on mine yet. it is next in project order after Thanksgiving as I really needed it during my last radio project. I watched that video as well. Very informative. I don't have the resources he has but I understand the process he was using. Mine is S/N D58432. I found a  schematic for mine dated 1957 which I believe is when mine was made by some of the markings inside. I can email you a copy if you haven't located one. Its actually the operating instructions as well. It looks to me that the positive ends of 108b & c are connected in relation to the negative side of 108a. Others with far more experience than I would be willing to help I'm sure. This is a great forum with a plethora of info and great people.

Takes about 2-3wks to get it but have ordered a couple and hasn't been any problems.
It can also can be used as a digital readout on a single conversion superhet as you can program it to + or - the IF frequency from the LO frequency. Instruction are in Chinese but there is an English YT vid on how to set in up and wire it.

Have you had sleep disruptions after looking at it?

They come in a couple of different colors that one was the first that came up on a search. You can also set the brightness via a button on the back. Mine are yellow and are 1- 200mc or so. Big bicycle not a rent a car.

I got my B&K counter, which is pretty accurate, for $25 or so plus shipping (wasn't that much).
It still make sense to look for old equipment bargains on eBay or locally.

I picked up an old BK years ago. I think it's a 1801? Used it as a counter to check the frequency of my old AM ham station. Worked ok but isn't sensitive at all. 1970's technology. I like the programmablty of this new one. By the time you buy a box and rig up a p/s you may be up to $20 or so...

Speaking of the sensitivity actually, when I use it with my Leader SigGen, it shows correct frequency at the minimum output.
The 5V input does not work, but then I do not even need that. Else I'd fix it.

Hey Terry, those Chinese counters look real nice to add digital readout to some of my old boatanchor receivers. 

How do you program in the IF offset? Do you need a computer interface or is it done with jumpers or with pushbuttons on the PCB?

It's pretty simple two small pushbuttons on the back of the pcb. No switches or interfacing to mess with. I know a HRO that is going to get one!

Terry, do you ever operate 40 meter sideband? I just finished restoring a Kenwood TS-420 Hybrid and finally got back on the air recently with a random longwire antenna. Maybe we can work you one day?
