Model 39B Front & Arch Veneer?
#1

Hi Group:

I am repairing a 1935 Philco model 39B battery set with cathedral cabinet. The poor girl is in awful shape and the front panel and arch have nearly completely de-laminated. I am slowly clamping and re-gluing.  I am missing some of the veneer on the front and nearly all of it on the arch and can use some advice on the veneer types on the front and arch. The front looks like book matched walnut? I am not so sure of the veneer on the arch - a toned white wood?  From the pieces that remain it looks like a darker wood with grain. What was commonly used on '35 model (introduced June '34) cathedral arches? Included are photos of the veneer on the front - one picture showing the obverse of the veneer (with the Philco logo) and one with the reverse of the veneer showing.  Thanks for any help! -- Andy

Hi Andy,

The 1935 (June 1934) Philco sales catalog lists the following for the 89B (same cabinet as 39B):

You can find the scanned catalog here:

Sorry there's not more to go on. Hopefully someone else can add to it.
