Switchable AUX Input
#1

This may be a "yeah so?" thread for the more electronically adept out there, but I figured I'd post my latest work as a reference for others looking to add a switchable AUX input.

For the last couple of years I have been using these instructions to add an AUX jack to my restorations:

http://www.spridgetguru.com/TA0041.html

A 1/8" Radio Shack Jack is installed as per the directions and the AUX audio is fed through the volume pot. Bingo/Presto no problem.

The only "issue" with this set up is that when you plug in the AUX cable it cuts out the AM broadcast (with some bleed through on strong stations) and you have to keep on pulling and inserting the cable to swich from AUX to AM/SW. I am thinking about using a 1/8" Audio Jack Bluetooth receiver but don't want to keep fishing around the back of the radio for the jack. A switch that I could flip for Broadcast/AUX would be much easier. This is how I did it.

I used the same instructions as above minus connecting pins 3+4 and running the wire from there to the cap/resistor/wire I removed from the Top terminal of the volume pot.

I drilled a hole in the chassis back and added a RatShack SPDT 3 pin switch.
[Note: I snipped off those stray strands of wire on the bottom post. Icon_smile ]

Then I ran the wires as so:
  • From the Top post of the volume vot to the center pole of the switch.
  • From the AUX input jack (the wire connected to the two resistors as per the instructions) to one of the side poles of the switch.
  • From the remaining pole of the switch to the wiring that was originally connected to the TOP post of the volume pot.
P.S.-Black wire is to ground.

Now I can leave the aux cable permanently attached to a device and switch between Broadcast and MP3 with the switch. I still have to turn the dial off of strong stations to prevent bleed through but I find this solution much more convenient.
