Voltages-socket pins for Mystery Control

I'm starting to design a replica battery for the Philco Mystery control.

I know it used a four-pin plug, but I don't know what the voltages were, nor do I know how they divvied the A and B polarities to the plug. Would
the B voltages be on the wider-spaced holes?

I'll let Chuck give you the specifics re: pinout of the "Mystery Pack" (original battery), but the voltages used were 3 volts and 45 volts.

Have not found my Mystery Controls yet - boxed for moving and have not surfaced so can't scan the battery plug just yet ....

Battery pack is a Philco BB30-12P, an "AB" type pack. 3 volts A and 45 volts B. Philco Part No. 41-8016.

Dimensions are LxWxH 4" x 1-1/8" x 6-3/16"

Found them - far corner bottom of hardest to get to stack. Figures.... Icon_rolleyes

The pack and battery plug have four connections. The plug wires are:

RED = +45
BLACK = -45
YELLOW = +3
GREEN = -3

The type 30 tube draws 60 ma. for heater and the plate current is a max of 3 ma. for the tube, but probably draws less in the Mystery control. This will help you establish the mAh ratings of your new cell pack.

Bill,

When you are done designing the BB30-12P, Mark II packs, can you send me a sample to test with? Would send it back to you. I'd like to get some electrical specs on the MC unit in operation.

Very nice package. As you can see, the battery in my unit is dark brown with gold (faded) lettering. Sort of plain. Here is a b/w picture of the colorful version. Socket cut-out is different too. Pic is from the 1946 parts catalogue. The 1941, 53, 55 catalogs all show the color package as well.

Maybe my battery is an early run?? The control came out in late 1938 for the 1939 model year.

All the catalogue pages are b/w images, unfortunately. It make take a while - lots of pages in all theose catalogues......

I ain't too proud to beg. Info is info, whether it be color or b/w. I recently received a full color 1939 catalog scan, and I have scanned a huge poster showing their 1959 battery line. Perhaps we could trade?

I'm starting to lay out the Mystery Control battery. That thing is THIN. I'd like to use a couple of C cells for the filament supply, but with the base I'm desigining, they barely fit in the container. Would a couple pair of 2AA holders wired in series-parallel be a good compromise, in your opinion?

A trade it is! Works for me. Will start to work on it. CD-ROM ok?

AA's won't have the "guts", unless you have a lot in series-parallel. The trouble then, with many series-strung cells is the imbalance in discharge rates of the cells and a lack-luster cell can bring down all cells in it' series-string.

Have you thought of using 2/3C, or sub-C sizes? I'd think the "C" size line would give you the mAh rating for decent useage for the filament? AA's would not have the "ampacity" for resonalbl life, I'd think.
