Need to replace Condenser
#1

Looking to locate a new condenser for my 42-321. The philco p/n is 30-4119 -- it's rated at .04mfd and 400 volts.
It's item #35 on the schmatic I'm looking at (Philco 14-18 and 14-19).
Any chance I could sub a cap for this hummer instead?

Thanks for your help with this.

check this web page   https://www.justradios.com/cart.html   . Scroll down the center column. Use the .033 or the .05 MFD 250V Y2 safety cap. Either should do the trick.

By the way, I had a devil of a time finding part number 35 on the Nostalgia Air schematic. I could find no condenser with that number. Then I noticed there was a cap across the AC input with no number shown, it's there to suppress interference coming in on the line. It seemed to be labeled .04 Mfd, so I assume that is the one you are asking about. since it is across the line, you need to use a safety cap. If they fail, they fail OPEN rather than SHORTED, which could cause a fire hazard.

Or if you'd like to save a bit and buy in the US: http://www.tuberadios.com/capacitors/
Scroll abt 1/2 way down. They are 20c ea for the .047.
Obtw Welcome to the Phorum!

Now I think I've got!

I've bought them from an outfit called WJOE radio myself, Just Radios is a bit expensive even for a Canadian shopper as they tend to sell so called "kits". The trouble with buying kits is what happens if whomever is packing them makes a mistake, either puts the wrong values in, or leaves a few out? In addition to the places Terry mentioned, and WJOE, you can also get them from Mouser and Digi Key, but you have to figure out their search engine first, they have caps made in all sorts of package styles, and materials, axial lead is what you want for restuffing, radial if you don't care about restuffing or are restuffing a block condenser. If that .04 uf is on the power line you may want to use a safety rated capacitor, ditto if it's on a tone control with the cap connected to the B+.

Arran
