Toning down new speaker cloth
#1

I have some new speaker cloth coming for my 38-250 bullet radio, thanks to Ron's suggestion on where to get it, and want to tone down the brightness of it as the radio is an original finish cabinet. Hoping someone here can suggest some toner to use and method on doing it. Thanks!

Sorry I did not get back to you -

I used toner - because I had some. I wanted the gold cloth to be redder so I used walnut. Sprayed from a distance with my paint gun so that the cloth was just misted. You DON"T want a heavy buildup. AND, wood dye without the lacquer would probably work better, sprayed the same way.

Russ,
Thanks.  By wood dye, do you mean stain?  I could give it a light mist from a distance, like you said.  I just think that new cloth in an original cabinet, without toning it down, might be like a diamond in a goats butt...

Woodworking stores carry dyes that can be applied to wood or mixed with lacquer. They are not stain.

Fabric dye will also work, but it often has to be heated first, depending on type, I have no idea if that could be sprayed. I don't think a new cloth is that bad, after a time it will collect dust, and dirt, just like the old ones did. In some cases I think that the dull colour may be attributed to tobacco tar as that was a popular pastime back in the 1930s and 40s.

Arran
