Thinning Mohawk M608-4226 Grain filler
#1

Guys I got my supplies from Mohawk and have begun the process on my 40-158 cabinet. I have it sanded and sealed and tomorrow I plan to do the grain filler. I have not opened the can yet, so I'm not sure of the consistency, however I did not know it required a specific thinner from Mohawk if required. They call it Grain Filler Solvent M608-106 and I don't have any. Is there something I can purchase locally to mix with it to thin it if required? Paint thinner, lacquer thinner, etc.? I don't know what the base is. Is anyone using this filler using anything other than the Mohawk Grain Filler Solvent? Thanks!

I have not used that grain filler so hopefully someone with direct experience will offer some advice. In the absence of anyone else responding.... The MSDS for the Mohawk solvent lists petroleum distillates and aliphatic petroleum distillates as the ingredients. Mineral spirits is also a petroleum distillate although perhaps a different fraction or mixture than the Mohawk solvent but would probably work for you.

Thank you Bob! I will give that a shot. Icon_smile

I use Timbermate. http://www.timbermate.com.au/. It's water-based. You can use it thick, right out of the container, as wood dough, or thin it to the consistancy of a milk shake for a grain filler. It drys fast, sands easy, and accepts any kind of stain. And there is no waste, because what ever is left over in your mixing tub can be re-constituted with a little water. It's great stuff!

If you haven't opened the can, inside the filler is very thick and the solvent has migrated to the top. I use a small container, scoop out some of the filler and add some of the solvent from the top to mix and thin. Don't think thinning will be an issue till you get near the bottom of the can if then. As Bob mentioned oms is a good choice if you do need some extra solvent.
